Homework assigned Wednesday and Thursday


Followup questions for homework for Wednesday and Thursday, NOT FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY. FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY LOOK TO THE PREVIOUS POST.:


1. Based on the budget making activity you worked on today, how would you argue that the Office of Management and Budget is a very powerful organization in the federal government?


Look at the budget pie chart (to the left) and answer the following questions:
2. What type of programs seem to be the highest spending priority for our government? (hint: the answer involves the colors blue, orange and dark red).
3. What kinds of programs do you think the category "Other Mandatory" refers to?
4. Is national defense important to our country? Argue using the evidence?
5. How important, relatively speaking, does the idea of helping the less fortunate in the world seem to be?
6. The yellow part worth 15.72% of the budget refers to non-discretionary spending. Use the internet to find out some examples of this.
7. If you could make three changes to this budget, what would you do, and why would you do it?

Some questions to answer for review for HW:

What is the Fed and what does it do? (2 pts)
What are the benefits that come with a society having full employment? (3 pts)

Describe the effects of the following on a society/economy (1 pt each):
The Congress raises taxes.
The Congress lowers taxes.
The Fed lowers the discount rate.
The Fed increases the reserve requirement

Draw a chart or diagram to compare the beliefs of Democrats and those of the Republicans when it comes to the economy. (3 pts)

In what ways does our country not have a true market economy? (3 pts)

You must answer all these questions. Please ask me if you need help. There is not excuse for not having all correct answers if you don't ask me for help.

Some bonus projects:


  1. Create a poster featuring an advertisement promoting one of the following types of economies: market economy, planned economy, mixed economy. Poster should be in color, attractive, and feature a simple concept that summarizes your view as to why this economy is the best. You must show me a rough draft (on white paper) before you make the final poster. 50 pts

  2. Create a poster explaining the ins-and-outs of the recent Health Care Act signed by Obama. Poster should explain, using text and graphics, exactly what the Health Care Act provides, as well as the political and economic effects that will come from it. Project must be well researched on reputable websites (cnn.com, realclearpolitics.com, theeconomist.com) and sources must be cited. Information must be paraphrased. Project will not be accepted with text copied directly from a website. 100 pts
